Trying to get back...

Hello all (if anyone still reads this)-

Well my life has slowed down a little bit so I am trying to get back into my blog.

I have updated my schedule with my two upcoming shows. Giant at Signature Theatre and The Full Monty at Paper Mill Playhouse.

Giant is a piece I have been a part of for almost a year now and I could not be more excited to see it start to take shape on the stage. Its an amazing score, a wonderful cast and just a once in a lifetime kind of project.

Full Monty is a show that I have been wanting to do since I saw it in NYC not long after moving to the east coast. Not only do I get to do the show but I get to do it at Paper Mill which is a theatre that I truly love working with.

In addition to that I am running for Council again this year. I was nominated by the committee and will be listed first on the ballot. There will be plenty of information about how to help very soon!

So I will post an actual update sometime soon. Lots to report on which is why I haven't... just been too busy.

A married couple went to the hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said that the hospital was testing an amazing new high-tech machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the baby's father. He asked if they were interested, Both said they were very much in favor of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10 percent was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch.
The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor then checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing.

At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since t he pain transfer was obviously helping the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain, and the husband had experienced none. She and her husband were ecstatic.

When they got home they found the UPS man dead on the porch.

I know to some of you this is preaching to the choir but this branch of the post office is THE WORST I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!

When I was getting ready to come to Hoboken for High School Musical, two weeks prior actually, I sent the change of address card in to the proper post office. Not all of my mail has been forwarded.

Jenny just came up to New Jersey with the astonishing amount of mail that had not been forwarded (including 6 bills that are all now late and incurring at least $40 fees on each). When I called the 22206 post office about it less than ten minutes ago the woman I spoke to (who I learned later was the supervisor!!) was rude and told me that she did not care. That she was sorry to hear about my bills but that I should re-examine how I handle my finances! First of all the "supervisor" of a branch of the US Postal Service should know how to speak proper English. I am not talking about a foreign accent of some kind... I AM TALKING ABOUT BASIC GRAMMAR! "I am sorry that your MAILS HAVEN'T been delivered." ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Not to mention that the woman on the phone had the NERVE to comment on how I handle my finances. I have no problem handling my finances when I receive my mail in a timely fashion as I would expect from the postal service. Not to mention as a civil servant you HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMMENT ON HOW I HANDLE MY BUSINESS OR MY FAMILY! I know many people in the area drive out of their way to go to another post office. Now, I cant say as I blame them.

New Musical Based on Oscar-Winning Film "Once" Aiming for Broadway Bow in 2010-2011

"Once," the intimate Academy Award-winning film about a struggling Irish street musician, will be adapted into a Broadway musical. Producers are aiming for a bow during the 2010-2011 season.

Tony-winning producers John N. Hart, Jr., Jeff Sine and Fred Zollo, who have collectively presented Spring Awakening; Caroline, Or Change; and The Who's Tommy to Broadway audiences, have acquired live theatrical rights to the film that was penned and directed by John Carney.

"In a landscape where the American musical must evolve, Once provides a wonderful, unique opportunity," said producer John Hart in a statement. "Those of us who fell in love with it and its score at the movie theater came out singing, and will do so again when it finds its way to the stage."

"The film was shot modestly, on a shoe-string budget and managed to capture the hearts of fans around the world, wildly exceeding all critical and box office expectations. It did so, because it invited its audience into the process of artists making music and did not stoop to melodrama," added producer Fred Zollo.

The stage production will incorporate songs from the film, which were penned and performed by The Frames band member Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. The duo won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original song for "Falling Slowly."

The film follows a down-and-out Dublin street performer who encounters a young Czech immigrant flower seller, who is taken with his music. Named only "Guy" and "Girl," the duo begin a music-fueled relationship where they spend a week writing and performing music together. The tale culminates in a nightlong recording session for a demo which they hope will land them a music contract in London. While only one of them ever makes it to London, the impact of their relationship leaves them both changed.

Representative for the production state that a creative team for Once will be announced shortly.

The independent Irish film was made for under $150,000, was shot in 17 days, and went on to gross over $10,000,000, becoming a critically acclaimed international smash. Songwriters Hansard and Irglová continue a worldwide tour performing songs from the Grammy-nominated soundtrack.

John McCain Wednesday praised his running mate, Sarah Palin as a "role model to women everywhere" and a "reformer" when challenged to defend her qualifications to be president.

UMMM... NO! "She's not a role model and reformer, she's a model and a performer."

McCain's smirk and cartoon villain sounding cackle is sounding very unpresidential.

So McCain just said that he thinks if you are in the military you shouldn't have to take the tests to become a STATE CERTIFIED TEACHER?!?! Now there are MANY MANY people in the military who would be kick ass teachers... but then there are many who should not teach anyone about anything! Being in the military should not be a blank check to teach our children.

How thick is Palin that the moderator used the word three times in one sentence and said it correctly. Palin opens her mouth and the first word she says she pronounces wrong!!

This woman is a heartbeat away from being the President of the United States of America... even more than a heartbeat with John McCain! COME ON PEOPLE?!?

She was so proud that she was able to tell America what the Vice President does. She should be very proud that her 15 minutes on Wikipedia paid off. The best part of her little book report was the "I Did It Right, I'm Gonna Get a Cookie" look she had on her face just like Bush.

If you have any kind of employer contributed healthcare you will see higher taxes. The "tax credit" that McCain speaks of will NOT make up for the higher taxes. McCain's plan will completely ruin the new healthcare plan that the teachers in Oklahoma (which is similar to the healthcare that many teachers have across the country) just negotiated.

The debates have made me extremely proud to support Obama/Biden. I also worry about those who can not see through McCain. We have had 8 years of the rich getting exponentially richer. I am a member of the middle class and the thoughts of what a McCain administration would do to me, my family and my friends it scares me to the point of tears.

I feel sorry for those with closed minds. Closing your mind closes your heart and impairs your ability to love.

Thats all I have the energy or spirit to write. Thinking about McCain as president is too depressing to think about for too long... it just sucks the will to live.

Drill, Drill, Drill

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of Feminists.

But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical to Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence and war.

I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor. In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the pollution and rise of cancers, a real part of God's plan. She is fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be taken and plundered. Iraq is here to betaken and plundered. As she said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task from God."

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does not believe women who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should have a right to determine whether they have their rapist's baby or not.

She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many babies that makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and might very well be the next president of the United States. She would govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.

Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting rifle. She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot hundreds of wolves from the air.

Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when war is declared in God’s name, when the rights of women are denied in his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the future not just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine whether we create policies to save the earth or make it forever uninhabitable for humans. It will determine whether we move towards dialogue and diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction. It will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of fear, fundamentalism and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill." I think of teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction. I think of domination. I think of military exercises that force mindless repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity or dissent. I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing we call life?

It looks as though Souvenir will not be going to Syracuse Stage after the first of the year.

Very sad but not the theatre's fault. They loved our production... as did everyone who saw it. Many of whom said it was MUCH BETTER than the Broadway production (including one woman who knew Fred's character personally!)

The new CPAP mask I ordered back at the end of MAY finally arrived!

What an ordeal it was. I finally found the one competent person who works at Aprea health care in that department. I ordered the mask in May and asked for it to be shipped to Mom and Dad's house in Oklahoma since I would be there for Taren's wedding. That gave them till July 8th for it to get there. By the time I left it was not there. So I called back on the 9th and asked to have it shipped to Hoboken since I would be there till the 3rd of August... nothing.

I get back to DC on Monday night. Tuesday I called. I am going to be here through the end of September... now three days and two nights later it arrived!

Where was this service back in May! I could have been sleeping since I got to Oklahoma!!

Needless to say I am very excited for some sleep tonight!

EVERYONE NEEDS TO CHEER UP!!

Those who really know me well know that my number one pet peeve is a pessimist!

Nothing can ruin a room, a conversation, a mood like someone with a shitty attitude. I just don't see what fun life is if you are never happy with anything. What is the use of always walking around pissed at everything or everybody.

If you have never read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly recommend it. Especially if you have a hard time being happy.

The Four Agreements are summarized below.

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word- Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't Take Anything Personally- Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't Make Assumptions- Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best- Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

I read this book in college and it changed my life. I have also found that if you don't constantly remind yourself of these four agreements you fall out of the practice of them. While I tend to lose the practice of some more than others number 2 is my favorite and the one that really rang true to me.

What I constantly remind myself is that you can only feel things that you allow yourself to feel. No one can MAKE you feel anything. So tonight I won the online Virtual Line (for those familiar with Rush tickets, its like an online lottery) for Hamlet at Shakespeare in the Park... in Central Park... NYC, YES THE SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK!!

I have always wanted to go but due to working out of town in the summer or not living in NYC I have never been able to go. It was amazing.

First of all being in the Delacorte theatre was just cool. This is a major place in American Theatre History!! I had great seats and it almost rained but, thank God, it didn't.

Second, it was a glorious production of Hamlet. I have seen several and this was by far the best. Oskar Eustis has always been a director I have been a big fan of... now he is on my "Must Work With Before I Retire" list. The entire cast was stunning. I would love to go into more details but I just don't have the words.

If you live in New York or plan on visiting you must do your best to see this production.

Good Advice

This is from an email I got from my mother's cousin in 2002. I have always held on to it and recently re-read it and thought it needed to be shared.

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop," the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be alive while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country, but not to guilt country.

10. Tell the people you love, that you love them, at every opportunity.

Whatever you think this post is going to be about you are probably wrong.

The past two weeks I have been completely surrounded by something that has been a part of my life for most of my life. It is everywhere and I cant get enough but I am feeling very unsatisfied.

Music

For the month of May I have been able to spend everyday listening to amazing singers working on one of my new favorite scores... ever. Yes I am still unemployed... no, I havent found another show yet. I am working on a reading of Giant by Michael John LaChiusa and Sybille Pearson. I can't say much about the reading other than the music is just breathtaking and these singers just dance on the music with their voices. Its a joy to hear everyday and I can't wait until the show is onstage at Signature Theatre.

Last summer I took a chance and saw a movie that I didn't know much about. I knew it was foreign and it was a musical. I left the movie theatre in tears, went directly home and bought the CD. That movie was Once.

The movie is, VERY SIMPLY, about an Irish songwriter who plays his guitar in the streets of Dublin. He is befriended by a pianist from the Czech Republic. Together they record some songs and develop a true relationship.

Once is such an amazing film. The story is beautiful and the music is so emotional. When I bought the CD I listened to it all the time... I still do. It came out on DVD when I was working on Glory Days at Signature and had to have it immediately.

The songs were all written by the guitarist and the pianist in the film (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova). Glen is from an Irish band called The Frames. This year their song "Falling Slowly" from Once won the Oscar. Now that they have started writing this amazing music together they have started a group called Swell Season.

One of the reasons that this music has been so heavily on my mind is that I recently saw them perform at Radio City Music Hall. Jenny had told me about the concert that was going to be on a Monday (YAY!!) but Glory Days performs on Mondays and I cant go (BOO!). Then Glory Days closed (MORE BOO!) BUT now I can go (YAY!) but the concert is sold out (BOO!). Finally I did some research on Craigslist and bought a ticket from someone who was no longer able to go. I got a FANTASTIC seat for only $60.

The concert was just amazing. It was just incredible to hear the music live and see them in person with thousands of other fans. After the opening band Glen came onstage and stepped in front of the mic. He played the first song from the film unamplified. The entire concert hall fell silent as we all just listened to this great song. I have been describing the concert as "three and a half hours of being on the verge of tears." Everything about the evening was so incredible and emotional that I knew that any moment I could start sobbing. (I didn't)

I love music so much and I think that its the attachment that I have to the music of Swell Season and the subject matter that makes it so special to me. Throughout the entire concert I wanted nothing more than to be able to pick up a guitar or sit at a piano and play this music. I wanted so badly to be able to make the music that they were making. Not necessarily write songs, but just be able to play the songs that they have written. Add to that my days spent with Michael John and his magnificent score... This music is hard and just amazing to watch our musical director play.

Music is a big part of my life. It is vital. It always has been and always will be and that is a gift from God that I am thankful for everyday. The gift I don't have is the ability to reach out and take the notes from the page and put them in the air for others to hear... that's what I am surrounded by but just can't hold.

An Elephant Never Forgets

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University .

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.

He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, think ing of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed his stupid ass against the railing, killing him instantly.

On Broadway!

And that is why I have been so neglectful of the blog... that and we just got Internet in our office.

Yes, Glory Days on Broadway started previews on the 22nd of April and it has been going really well. We are still a new musical so we are still constantly making changes and working on getting it right.

We officially open on May 6th. Thank you to all of my friends who have already come out to see and support me and the show.

In other news-

-Jenny had Lasik eye surgery on Saturday and is doing really well. I think she is already loving not having to deal with glasses or contacts!

-Tuesday the 29th I spent my day off with some special visitors. Debbie and Mikey Hankins have been in DC for a few days visiting Spencer and yesterday they came up to NYC (with Spencer and Jenny). The five of us took a trip downtown to visit Ground Zero and then played around in Midtown until about 6pm. Then we all went to a Yankees game. It was a lot of fun. We lost and it was cold but we still had a great time. After we made it back to the hotel the Hankins family went to bed and the Speakers headed to Hoboken to do the same. Today I had rehearsal, as did Jenny and the Hankins Trio is loose on the Big Apple completely unsupervised... I am sure there will be stories.

-On Monday night the Helen Hayes awards were presented. I am pleased to announce that two of my shows faired very well. Two awards for Meet John Doe (Heidi Blickenstaff for leading lady in a musical and Eric Schaeffer for direction of a musical) and three awards for the amazing production of Souvenir (J. Fred Shiffman for leading man in a play, Nancy Robinette for leading lady in a play and Reggie Ray for costume design). Jenny's shows won like thirty awards or something like that but I am very proud of my five awards for my shows!!

Quick Trip

Jenny and I took a quick trip to New York last Monday. I met with the PSM for Glory Days, toured the space and spent some time in the General Manager's office. The show is going to look so good in Circle In The Square I can't even begin to tell you.

That night we saw several of our friends in their show, Cry Baby! Jenny and I ran into Kristan McLaughlin from Goodspeed and we brought her along as well. We had a good time and laughed a lot.

It is now Friday. I have five more performances of 1776 then I move on Monday. This is probably the most stressed I have ever been and that says alot. Those of you who know me know that I do NOT GET STRESSED!!

Chances are the next post will be from New York City!!

Its going to be fantastic. Its a great cast and we are having a blast.

After 1776 opens I head to New York to start my Broadway Debut!

I cant say much but Glory Days is transferring to Circle In The Square and I will be going as the Assistant Stage Manager.

Previews start April 22nd and we open on May 6th.

Catholic Horses

One day while he was at the track playing the ponies and all but losing his shirt, Mitch noticed a priest who stepped out onto the track and blessed the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the 4th race. Lo and behold, that horse - a very long shot - won the race.

Before the next race, as the horses began lining up, Mitch watched with interest the old priest step onto the track. Sure enough, as the 5th race horses came to the starting gate the priest made a blessing on the forehead of one of the horses.

Mitch made a beeline for a betting window and placed a small bet on the horse. Again, even though it was another long shot, the horse the priest had blessed won the race.

Mitch collected his winnings, and anxiously waited to see which horse the priest would bless for the 6th race. The priest again blessed a horse. Mitch bet big on it, and it won. Mitch was elated. As the races continued the priest kept blessing long shot horses, and each one ended up coming in first.

Bye and bye, Mitch was pulling in some serious money. By the last race, he knew his wildest dreams were going to come true. He made a quick dash to the ATM, withdrew all his savings, and awaited the priest's blessing that would tell him which horse to bet on.

True to his pattern, the priest stepped onto the track for the last race and blessed the forehead of an old nag that was the longest shot of the day. Mitch also observed the priest blessing the eyes, ears, and hooves of the old nag.

Mitch knew he had a winner and bet every cent he owned on the old nag. He then watched dumbfounded as the old nag come in dead last.

Mitch, in a state of shock, made his way down to the track area where the priest was. Confronting the old priest he demanded, "Father! What happened? All day long you blessed horses and they all won. Then in the last race, the horse you blessed lost by a Kentucky mile. Now, thanks to you I’ve lost every cent of my savings - all of it!”

The priest nodded wisely and with sympathy. "Son," he said, "that's the problem with you Protestants; you can't tell the difference between a simple blessing and last rites."

Three men from Texas were sitting together one day bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

The first man had married a woman from Illinois and had told her that she was going to have to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man had married a woman from Michigan. He had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man had married a girl from IDAHO. He told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little bit out of his left eye, enough to fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher.

Life after Glory Days... is sad because it was such a special project. Only hours after the show closed I got on a plane to visit Oklahoma for a week. I got to spend a lot of time with Mom, Dad and Taren as well as spending time with my future brother-in-law, Jordan, and his daughter, Morgan. Jordan is a really terrific guy and Morgan is very sweet. I went with Jordan to pick her up on Friday and after being reminded who I am (she is 7 and its been a year and a half since she has seen me) she was happy to have me around. Friday night Uncle Jess to Morgan to see Hannah Montana in 3-D (Its a filmed version of the concert... I don't have the $2000 to win tickets on eBay for the concert!). We had a good time.

Now I am babysitting Karen and Kevin for the next two weeks and getting ready for a few up coming gigs.

Fallen From Proust

World premieres are what I live for. There is nothing like working on a new play and this was a great experience. It was a great show with a great cast and I miss them dearly.

Pacific Overtures

Recently I set one of my career goals: to have done every Sondheim. So far I have five under my belt. Pacific was the last Sondheim I was able to do and it was a great experience. It was a cast of all old friends and with lighting by Mark Lanks there was no doubt that it would be a challenge to call and fun.

I ran into Rick Holmes when I was in New York for Happy Days. He is now on Broadway in Spamalot. That party at his place was AWESOME... Skinny dipping... it was a good time!

One Red Flower

There were manythings about this play that made it special. For one thing it was a new musical. If you have never been a part of a new musical before you are missing out! It is what I live for. I LOVE IT!! It was also a blast to call. There were over 400 cues between LX, Sound and Projections. Another special thing was the involvement of Debbie Brudno. Her husband was a Vietnam POW with an amazing story. The cup you see in the picture below is the acutal cup that Alan had in the POW camp. The things I learned on this show changed my life forever.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum

This was my third production of Forum. This time I was the Equity Assistant Stage Manager. This was a great chance to work with some really great friends of mine. This was a show of happiness and sadness. Jenny and I got married the week before tech and during the run Steve and Matts house burned.

This was a very special show. It was an amazing cast and creative team paired with great material. It was such a beautiful show. This is one of the shows I miss.

Well, tech for Glory Days was amazing! We teched hundreds of light cues in under 16 hours total!! Invite Dress is on Sunday and my friend from Oklahoma, Celia Card, is coming. She is in town for the Christening of her new grand baby!

Now I know Christmas is over but I still want to share. I was going to get these pictures up before Christmas but with the computer problems it didn't happen.

Below is a picture of the Cartney-Speaker-Hankins Nativity 2007. When Jenny and I were shopping for our Goddaughter we found a really cool nativity coloring activity book. So we bought it and one night the three of us sat down and colored. I am hoping to make it an annual tradition.

The pictures below are a few from Spencer's Birthday party. We went ice skating in the sculpture garden on the National Mall followed by dinner at Austin Grill with the three of us and Monica.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

We certainly did. Spencer survived his first Cartney Family Holiday and I am very proud. We all went out to Annapolis to Jenny's Aunt's house. It was great to see everyone and there were alot of people there including some folks that Jenny and I didn't know.

Spencer made his Pumpkin Roll (which was a big hit) and Jenny made a Green Bean and Corn Casserole and a Almond/Cranberry/Butternut Squash Bake (also a HUGE hit). Other Cartney Holiday favorites made an appearance including Grandma's Pumpkin Soup and Doug's Mashed Potatoes!

Spencer and I were mostly very well behaved! There was one woman there (one of Aunt Susan's neighbors I think) who was a character. She was an older woman and wanted to know everything about everyone.

At one point someone asked me about work and this lady perked right up and started to ask me what I did. With every part of the answer the look on her face got weirder and weirder. I told her I was with the Ballet... the Suzanne Farrell Ballet... at the Kennedy Center... She kept looking at me with this really odd look. Finally I looked at her and said, "Honey, I'm a dancer!!" Everyone laughed!

Earlier she had asked Jenny about one of the dishes she had made. Jenny told her it was Almond, Cranberries and Butternut Squash.
"But what is it called?"
"Almond/Cranberry/Butternut Squash Bake" Jenny gave her the exact title that was on the recipe!
"Well does it have a name??"
"I call it Francis!!" I finally chimed in.

I think that landing two jokes makes for a very successful Thanksgiving!

Rt. Reverend Philip A. Berning, O.S.B., Fifth Abbot of St. Gregory's Abbey, died peacefully at home at St. Gregory's on Saturday, November 17, 2007, sustained by prayer and strengthened by the sacraments of the Church.

Father Philip was born Anthony Bernard Berning on June 8, 1915, in Ashton, Iowa, to Joseph and Elizabeth Haverkamp Berning. He had four brothers and five sisters, all now deceased.

After grade school in Ashton, Father attended St. John's University Preparatory School, Collegeville, MN, and college at Trinity College, Sioux City, IA, for two years. He entered the novitiate of St. Gregory's Abbey in 1935, receiving the name of Philip. He made his simple monastic profession at St. Gregory's on July 11, 1936, and solemn monastic profession on July 11, 1939. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Benedict's College, Atchison, KS, in 1938. Upon completion of theological studies at St. John's Seminary, Collegeville, MN, Father Philip was ordained to the priesthood at St. John's on June 7, 1942, at which time he returned to St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee. He received an honorary LL.D. from St. Vincent College, Latrobe, PA, in 1956.

Father Philip was elected Coadjutor Abbot to Abbot Mark Braun on March 12, 1953, and received the abbatial blessing from Bishop Eugene McGuinness on May 6, 1953. He succeeded Abbot Mark on the latter's death on April 2, 1954. Father Philip led the community as Abbot for the next 16 years, through the times of the Second Vatican Council, until he resigned on February 16, 1970.

During his tenure, St. Gregory's experienced great growth. The monks built a new monastery building as many young men entered the community. The community assessed its ministries and made the decision to close St. Gregory's High School and place increased emphasis on St. Gregory's College. During that period, many of the present buildings on campus were constructed. The college administration building, Benedictine Hall, was completely reconstructed. Bernard Murphy Hall, housing the student and monastery food service, Duperou-Degrasse and Mark Braun residence halls, the Commons, and the aquatic center were all completed during his term as Abbot.

Before he was elected Abbot, Father Philip served in several positions in the monastery, including as procurator, director of scholastics, and novice master. He served as Prefect of Discipline for St. Gregory's High School, where he also taught religion, history and typing. His pastoral assignments included two terms as pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Ada, Oklahoma, and many years as pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church in McLoud, Oklahoma. After his tenure as abbot he served as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Chandler, Oklahoma. In his later years he served as porter and procurator at St. Gregory's Abbey.

He was a positive example to all in his gentility, humility, quiet service and devotion to prayer. He greeted all with a shy smile and welcoming eyes. He remained a faithful witness of monastic observance and ministry for seventy-one years and bore the increasing effects of Alzheimer's disease with great faith and patience.

PERSONAL NOTE:
Father Phillip was, as many of us at St. Greg's at the time called him, precious. At first sight you saw that he was a kind, gentle and very holy man.

He loved the world God has given us and found great joy in nature. We spent many a time sitting outside on a lovely day just looking at the trees, clouds, sky... whatever there was to look at.

He also took joy in the not so lovely days. One of his jobs in the Abbey was to go to the University mail room and get the mail for the Abbey. As long as I have known him Fr. Phillip has looked frail (probably looked frailer than he actually was).

I will never forget one COLD morning early in my days at St. Gregory's. There was ice everywhere! I was sitting outside the fine arts building and I see Fr. Phillip coming out of the house. He took a few steps and looked ahead at the walkway. Suddenly he started walking faster (running as best he could) and did a little jump sliding about 3-5 feet on the ice. My heart stopped as I realized I was about to see this elderly man fall on the ice and shatter into a million pieces! He did not fall. His sliding stopped and a smile came to his lips as he gently giggled and went about his way to the mail room. It was his little game. It was a very special moment to me to have witnessed this little private moment of joy. I saw it a few other times but never worried... but still stuck around and watched just in case.

Passing of a Friend

Father Phillip Berning, OSB entered the life everlasting this morning around 10am.

Fr. Phillip was a monk for 71 years, a priest for 65 years and served St. Gregory's as Abbot for 17 years! He also was the priest that baptised Spencer.

Here Fr. Phillip (with Fr. Manuel) gives a special toast at the monestary's fourth of July celebration.

At Long Last

I have now been home for a week and I have had some good times but on the whole have also been pretty bored. Don't get me wrong... I always enjoy spending time with Jenny and Spencer but while they are both at work... I sat in the basement and twiddled my thumbs!!

On Sunday Spencer and I went to see the show that Jenny took over. Tick... tick... BOOM! at MetroStage. It is a show that I have always adored. Add to that Jenny at the helm of the band and my good friend Stephen Gregory Smith in the lead and you couldn't ask for a better evening of theatre. Spencer wanted to sit front and center so we did... and I could feel SGS think, "Those sons of bitches." I must also point out the amazing work of Matt Gardiner who helmed the production. He is a fantastic young director who will take this city and others by storm!

Tick runs through November 25th and there are still tickets available... call now... see it... tell your friends... and see it with them!!

Tuesday night Jenny and I saw another amazing performance. The Word Begins at Signature Theatre.

It is an amazing hour and a half of slam poetry, truth and entertainment. The two artists in this show are amazing and I hope this show has a long life after its run in Arlington.

As for me? Today? I started working again!! I have three days of prep for The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Its a quick two and a half week gig. The company is currently in Cincinnati and arrives in Washington Sunday night to start rehearsals on Monday.

I was hesitant to post anything because I think I was afraid that it wouldn't really happen.

Tomorrow I will be recording my first cast album. The cast of Happy Days is recording a cast album produced by John McDaniel and PS Classics.

We will be in the studio from 10am-10pm tomorrow and then I will head home on Tuesday!!

So... since we last spoke I have teched Happy Days at Paper Mill Playhouse and I will be calling the entire run!

Tomorrow will be our first day off since the 16th of September. Needless to say I am very excited for tomorrow. I will be taking out the trash and dropping off my laundry and visiting some friends in NYC but only after I have slept as long as I can.

Needless to say I have been alot busier than I had planed to be at this point.

Last night was all about what I would wear to the big opening night bash! I am still not happy with my choice but that's what I have.

I brought my camera so there should be lots of pictures to post soon.

I am alive just not online alot. We just got the wireless in the rehearsal studio hooked up and the cable modem in my apartment is not yet hooked up.

I have settled into my place in New Jersey and rehearsals are well underway for Happy Days. Its looking great! The choreography is all much harder and VERY HOT! I cant wait for those of you who will get to see it to see it.

While in NYC I have connected with some friends and gone to see Spring Awakening. Tonight Spencer, Jenny and I are seeing Curtains.

Also while I am here I am going to try and shadow as many stage managers as possible.

So if you happen to be reading this from NYC, give me a call as I would LOVE to see you!!

So there has been a change of plans and I no longer have any sad news to announce!

I was going to tell you all that I would not be going to Paper Mill with Happy Days but thankfully some things have changed and I will not be leaving my Happy Days in Milwaukee!!

This is all fantastic news as the thought of leaving this show and this group of people was breaking my heart. If you know or have worked with me you know how paternal I get with my casts. I will not have to leave my kids with a babysitter in NJ! :)
